No, satellites do not strictly require undersea communication cables to send signals around the world, but most long-distance satellite data eventually connects to these cables once it reaches land.

How Satellites and Cables Work Separately

Independent Operation: Communications satellites in space send and receive radio waves directly to and from ground stations (called teleports) on Earth. They do not need a physical wire or underwater cable in the middle of space-to-ground transmissions.
Global Coverage: Satellites can beam signals to remote areas, oceans, and places with no infrastructure, making them completely independent of local cables for direct line-of-sight communication.

Why They Usually Connect Together

The Land Connection: When a satellite sends data to a ground station on one continent (for example, the US), that data enters regular land-based fiber-optic networks. If that data needs to go to another continent (like New Zealand), it is usually transferred onto a submarine communication cable because cables carry data across oceans much faster and in much larger amounts than satellite links.
The 99% Rule: Undersea cables carry more than 99% of all intercontinental data traffic. Satellites handle less than 1%, mostly for remote areas, ships at sea, airplanes, and military use.

Speed and Capacity Differences

Undersea Cables: Use pulses of light through glass fibers. They offer massive data capacity (terabits per second) and very low delay (latency) because light travels fast through fiber.
Satellites: Traditional geostationary satellites have high latency because they orbit very far away. Newer low-Earth orbit (LEO) constellations are much faster, but they still cannot match the sheer volume and speed of a multi-terabit undersea fiber cable.
