I am a deeply concerned homeschool teacher, and I stand alongside fellow educators, parents, and students in urging the New Zealand Parliament to reject the proposed changes to the homeschool legislation currently being deliberated. These proposals have not been adequately discussed with the New Zealand homeschooling community, yet they threaten to bring drastic, unconsidered alterations to the way we educate our children. The consequences of these changes, if implemented, are monumental.

For families choosing to homeschool, these amendments challenge a way of life that we’ve carefully crafted around educational freedom and individualised learning experiences. Homeschooling allows us the flexibility to tailor education to each child’s unique needs, fostering environments where curiosity and a love for learning can flourish. The introduction of stringent regulations could strip away this dynamic approach to learning and homogenise educational paths, subjecting them to a one-size-fits-all framework.

Moreover, the proposed changes risk imposing unnecessary bureaucratic burdens on homeschools. This would not only affect the dedicated teachers and parents who work tirelessly to provide quality education but also the students who thrive in these personalised settings. We believe in maintaining high educational standards without the need for excessive regulatory oversight that does not align with the homeschool philosophy of education.

Businesses and organisations supporting homeschool communities could also face significant adversity. Many rely on the freedoms currently afforded to homeschoolers to innovate in educational resources, curricula, and support networks. These changes could stifle such innovation and compromise the availability of invaluable resources that help our children succeed.

At its core, these legislative proposals put at risk the freedom that homeschoolers cherish. The move towards more controlled structures seems to ignore the fact that homeschooling in New Zealand has long been recognised for producing well-rounded, successful, and happy individuals. Policy changes that threaten this landscape should not be made without comprehensive consultation and evidence-based justification.

We urge the members of the New Zealand Parliament to listen to the voices of the homeschool community, to consider the impact these changes could have on our families and our children, and to reject the proposed legislation.
