The first circlet, or crown, symbolizes the pope’s “universal episcopate.” This means that he claims to be ruler over all the church of Christ. All priestly power, including the power to forgive sins, must come through him and his agents.
This is why the current pope, John Paul II, felt justified in reminding us that you must be in submission to him in order to be saved. “No salvation outside the church of Rome.” Quite simply, this makes spiritual slaves of nearly one billion people for whom Christ died.
The second crown symbolizes the pope’s claimed “primacy of jurisdiction.” This means that he alone is complete ruler of the church. He is the final judge, teacher and ruler. Over the Church of Christ, the pope claims to be King.
The last circlet in the crown represents the pope’s temporal power.
This means that he is ruler of the entire world. All kings, presidents and governments are subservient to him. The papacy claims that all civil rulers have only that authority which the pope, as spiritual and temporal head, allows them to have.
Lest you think this to be an empty claim, consider how rulers and governments tremble at the opposition of the pope.
In recent years, many rulers have been toppled when they lost papal favor. Once he turns against a government, the pope can raise up a mighty opposition of loyal Catholics to topple a government from within.
The papal emblem also contains a pair of crossed keys. These represent the supposed power of the pope to forgive sins. Alexander Hislop, in the classical work, The Two Babylons, gives the fascinating background of how these keys helped the pope gain control over the pagans by this adaptation of the ancient keys of Janus and Cybele.
Another important part of the papal shield is the big letter “M” at the lower right quadrant of the shield. This stands for Pope John Paul II’s undying devotion to the Virgin Mary.
While many “Protestants” believe that Rome is changing, this pope is actually bringing Catholic doctrine back to the old ways, with worship of Mary playing a key role.
The end of the matter is this: the popes still dream of world dominion. Claiming all authority and power, they strive to manipulate populations, governments and nations.
Their dreams have led them to seek to be “that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth.” (Rev. 17:18)
Many great preachers have already predicted that, one day, a pope will stand in the temple to receive the worship of the nations. Come quickly, Lord Jesus.
The Papal Triple Crown and the Jewish High Priest’s Miter
In order to celebrate the feast of Christ the King (the final day of the liturgical year, celebrated yesterday), I wanted to post just a brief piece of background on the Papal Triple Crown (frequently referred to as the papal “tiara”). Although it is little known, this crown has its roots (surprise!) in ancient Judaism. In particular, we find a direct parallel in the miter that was worn by the Jewish high priest!
Josephus–himself a first-century Jewish priest–gives us a detailed description of the High Priest’s miter:
“ The high priest’s miter was the same that we described before, and was wrought like that of all the other priests; above which there was another, with swathes of blue embroidered, and round it was a golden crown polished, of three rows, one above another ; out of which arose a cup of gold…” (Josephus, Antiquities, 3.172; trans. Whiston, p. 90)
This liturgical head-gear was based on the description of the high priest’s miter found in the book of Exodus:
“And you shall make a plate of pure gold, and engrave on it, like the engraving of a signet, “Holy to the LORD.” And you shall fasten it on the miter (LXX mitras ) by a lace of blue; it shall be on the front of the mitre. It shall be upon Aaron’s forehead…” (Exodus 28:36-38)
With such descriptions, we find the Jewish background for description of Christ as high-priestly Son of Man in the Van Eyck triptych I attached above (see picture). We also discover the background for the Catholic tradition that the Pope, as the successor to Peter, is not simply the chief bishop, but the High Priestly Vicar of Christ. I’m only speculating–perhaps someone could confirm this–but could the triple crown signify the threefold office: (1) Priest, (2) Prophet, and (3) King?

There is a right way and a wrong way to learn about Lakota values
Many tribal nations are suffering from outsiders who come in and appropriate spirituality and customs, and sometimes ceremony is sold by tribal members who should know better. According to Oglala Lakota Headsman and Spiritual Elder Floyd Looks for Buffalo Hand, there is a right way and a wrong way to learn from the Lakota, and he explains it here.
At 75 years old, Hand is looking hard at the past, present, and future of Lakota culture. So much has changed in the last century, and Hand asks all people to honor the traditions that kept ceremonies sacred for thousands of years.
Born in 1939, Hand began learning Lakota teachings in the 1940s, and have continued since. As a descendant of the original signers of the 1868 Laramie Treaty, he is a member of the Oglala Lakota Black Hills Treaty Council, where recently a General Counsel meeting was attended by Lakota language speakers. Hand said, “Everyone who came spoke the language, and everybody sang.”
The meeting, held at the Mother Butler Center in Rapid City, South Dakota, was attended by at least 70 people with at least one member of the tribal council, Jacqueline “Jackie” Siers, in attendance. The treaty council delegates looked at Oglala Lakota Resolutions written in 1971, 1978, and 1982, which stated that only Oglala Sioux Teton Lakota Oyate could participate in the Sundance or handle eagle feathers in accordance with federal law.
Members discussed passing another resolution that would prohibit non-Natives from running ceremonies or holding sacred objects such as eagle feathers and eagle bone whistles. “We have to be trained by a spiritual leader and earn the rights to carry a sacred pipe. That sacred pipe does not speak the language of English,” Hand said.
As the spokesman for the meeting, Hand reported that even some tribal members are not familiar with leading ceremonies, and some people are bringing peyote into the Sundance. “That’s two separate ways of praying, they are not done at the same time,” Hand said. He added that some Native people are “going ‘round making chiefs, allowing Christian non-Natives to be chiefs and carry a pipe.”
Members of tribes from Arizona, Montana and North Dakota have expressed similar concerns. Marvin Young Dog, Oglala Lakota who lives in Arizona and returned for the meeting, said, “We went to express our opinion, and at the meeting a lot of things came out. There are a lot of rumors and a lot of facts that white people are holding eagle feathers, and some are paying a lot of money for them. We are curious about what is going on,” he said.
“At that meeting, they all concluded that anyone who runs a ceremony, Sundance or sweat lodge has to do it in the language of the Sacred White Buffalo Calf Woman,” Hand said.
Looking towards the future, Hand wonders who he will pass his knowledge, language, and history of the Lakota Oyate to. “It is really hard for any young man to dedicate themselves to our way of life because of this modern technology and that is what is hurting all our young people throughout North America.”
Hand said, even in immersion schools on the reservation, assimilation has affected the old ways of thinking, “and I don’t think I am wrong to say the European world does not have our custom values of life,” Hand said.
The Seven Lakota Values, given by the White Buffalo Calf Woman, have also suffered through the loss of language and todays fast paced, technological lifestyle. The values include Praying, Respect, Caring and Compassion, Honesty and Truth, Generosity and Caring, Humility, and Wisdom.
“The White Buffalo Calf Woman did not bring the pipe in the English language, but she never taught to exclude anybody,” Hand said, adding that all people are welcome to come and pray, but only Lakota speakers can lead the ceremonies. For outsiders who come to the reservations, learning the values may be an alternative to practicing ceremonial traditions that take a lifetime to learn.
“There is a protocol,” Hand said. “Take your time. When I was chosen to be a buffalo chief, the first journey I made was nine years. The next journey was five years, the third was eight years, and the last journey was three [years]. I have taught non-Indians the simple language of praying. In my lifetime, I have witnessed two of them who walk with us and speak fluently, pray fluently, and respect themselves. They are giving people, they are helping people—they help the elders. They do everything that is required under the law of mystery.”
Non-Native veterans who come to pray with Hand receive instructions that take years to learn. “The third year we let them pray by themselves to find out who they are, where they are, and what their journey is about,” Hand said.
“These are the ways; but the New Age concept, they want to do everything one, two, three. It’s not like that when you follow the sacred way of the circle—it’s a lifetime. It is the supreme law of the circle of the universe brought by the three ladies: Mother Earth, Mother Moon, and Mother Sun,” Hand said.
“Our purpose is to educate, not to offend. I encourage all non-Indians to do their family tree. Who is their mother and father, and who was their mother and father? Find out where you come [from] and when you do that, you are going to feel a lot better about yourself. You’re going to be able to say, ‘I am a human being. I am part of the earth and the sun, and the water and the air, the four-legged and the winged,’ and you can say that because you know who you are,” Hand said. “If you are of Irish descent, or German, or Hispanic, learn the language and culture instead of coming to the Oglala Sioux and desecrating what is sacred to us. People are passing it around and charging money to run ceremonies—charging individuals $1,000 to dance. This is happening!” he said.
“There are no mistakes. Everything is equal on the journey, and what will happen in your path will happen. You will learn from it,” Hand said. “I cherish the language that was given to me from the spirit world and I will always stand by it. In your lifetime, you must give yourself to the people and if you look in any direction, at each color of skin, if you put all those colors into one, as my grandfather said, that is the color of blood. Black, red, yellow, white, we are all one blood; and we are all related.”

The Sacred White Buffalo Woman told the Lakota when they die, their souls must be purified so they can reunite with Wakan Tanka – the Great Spirit.
A lock of hair from a departed person was taken and held over a piece of burning sweetgrass to purify it.
Then it was wrapped in a piece of sacred buckskin, and the Sacred Pipe was smoked.
The buckskin bundle, called the soul bundle, was kept in a special place in the tipi of the soul’s keeper, usually a relative. The Keeper of the Soul vowed to live a harmonious life until the soul could be released, usually about one year.
The ceremony to release the soul began with a buffalo hunt and construction of a special lodge. Kinnikinnik – sacred tobacco – was smoked in the Pipe and special food was buried as an offering to the Earth.

The bundle containing the soul was carried outside and as soon as it reached the air, the soul was released.
The soul then traveled along the Spirit Path, which is the Milky Way, to reach Maya Owichapaha – the old woman who judges each soul.
If she judged it worthy, she sent the soul to the right … to Wakan Tanka. Unworthy souls were sent to the left where they remained until they finally could become purified and join Wakan Tanka.
Inipi – The Rite of Purification

The Lakota term for sweat lodge is Inipi which means ‘to live again‘. Inipi is a purification rite and is necessary in order to help the vision quest seeker enter into a state of humility and to undergo a kind of spiritual rebirth.
The sweat lodge is central to Inipi. Prayers offered there draw on all the powers of the universe — Earth, Water, Fire and Air. In the old days, Inipi was done before any major undertaking to purify the body and gain strength and power.
The actual lodge itself is a dome constructed of 16 young willow trees placed in a circle, traditionally covered with hides so no light could penetrate inside.
On the outside, the formation of the site comprises an earth mound just outside the door of the sweat lodge, facing east, and a fire pit containing stones. The fire represents the sun. Another mound partially encircling the fire pit represents the crescent moon. This is the outer world or cosmos; the inner world is the sweat lodge. It represents the womb of the universe from which souls are created anew.
Prayers are said at each stage of the construction of a sweat lodge. When it is completed, a burning coal is brought in and sweetgrass is burned by the leader of the Inipi to purify the lodge. The pipe is smoked and carried outside, where it is placed on the mound of earth.

The other participants enter the lodge, sitting in a circle on sacred sage, and the Pipe is brought in and smoked. The heated rocks are placed on the center fireplace and the Pipe returned to the earth mound. Then, the door is closed.
During the ritual, the door is thrown open four times to represent the four ages described by the Sacred White Buffalo Calf Woman. The fourth time, participants leave the lodge, emerging from dark to light which represents the liberation from the physical universe. All that is impure is left in the

A Native American person usually undertakes a vision quest in an isolated area, generally without food or water.
The “seeker” remains isolated as long as it takes to achieve the desired goal; the quest may last up to three or four days.
Quest design varies according to the tribe’s culture and the purpose for seeking a vision. A successful vision quest will produce contact with a spirit helper or guide.
This guides presence is often signaled by a visionary experience or contact with an animal.
All men and women can “cry for a vision” or what Black Elk calls “lament,” but only the worthy will receive one. To undertake a Vision Quest in the proper way, a Wičasa Wakan – Holy Man – should advise the seeker and interpret the vision.
The most important reason for the Vision Quest is so a person can understand better his/her oneness with all things and gain knowledge of the Great Spirit.
A person undertaking a Vision Quest first goes with a filled pipe to the holy man. He enters and ask that the holy man be his guide and pray for him.

Everyone present smokes the Pipe. The Inipi ceremony is conducted to purify them. Traditionally, the seeker builds the sweat lodge by himself.
The seeker then takes his pipe and some tobacco and goes to his isolated place, often on a high mountain or bluff. Helpers go ahead to prepare the sacred place. The seeker stays at the sacred place and prays for a vision. Visions often come to the seeker in the form of an animal, and dreams carry the most powerful visions.
At the end of the Vision Quest, the helpers return and take the seeker back to the sweat lodge. The seeker tells all he has seen and heard to the Wičasa Wakan who interprets the vision.

| Wiwanke Wachipi – The Sun Dance
The Sun Dance was the most important ceremony practiced by the Lakota (Sioux) and nearly all Plains Indians. It was a time of renewal for the tribe, people and earth. The village was large, as many bands came together for this annual rite. Each tribe camped within their own circle, which was part of another circle. A large circular arena was cleared, and a double ring of sticks was erected around the outside. Branches were placed on the top as shelter for the dancers, singers and spectators. The Holy Men went to the forest and selected a large cottonwood tree to be used as the central pole. A man was selected because of a great deed or feat of bravery to count coup on the tree that was cut down. As it fell, it wasn’t allowed to touch the ground. The tree was trimmed and taken back to the dance site, where it was decorated and erected in the middle of the arena. The ceremony began at sunrise the next day, and anyone could dance. Dancers looked at the sun as they danced, and short breaks without food and drink were allowed. This went on for four days – usually while the self-sacrificers prepared themselves. Usually these men, as it was rare for a woman to participate, wanted something specific – good hunting skills, better fighting skills or healing powers. Their bodies and spirits were purified through the Inipi ceremony before the dance. Each dancer had a mentor to help him through the ceremony. This would be a Holy Man or someone who had already danced. The Holy Men prepared buffalo skulls and placed them around the arena. Long lengths of rawhide were tied to the central pole. Dancers wore rings of sage on their heads and often around their wrists and ankles; each man carried a whistle made from the wing bone of an eagle. As the dancers stood around the arena, the holy men approached them and pierced each side of their chests with a length of bone. Next, the rawhide thongs were attached to the bone. The dance began as a slow shuffle. Some chose not to be tethered to the pole. Instead, they had the bones pierced through their backs, and then buffalo skulls were attached with thongs. The dancers drug these heavy skulls around as they danced.
The purpose of the dance was to remove the bone pieces from the dancers body. Dancers at the pole pulled themselves backwards, trying to tear their flesh and release themselves. Those with skulls attached to their backs danced over rocks and through bushes. They hoped to catch the skulls on something and rip them from their bodies. Dancers who had not released themselves close to sundown received help from their mentors. The mentors grabbed the dancers from behind and jerked them backwards in an effort to tear the bones from the skin. If the dancer hadn’t been released by sundown, the Holy Men removed the bones in reverse to the initial piercing. Many Sun Dancers were traumatized and shocked by the experience. After the ceremony, they went to the dancers lodge where medicine men cared for them. Also in attendance were the Holy Men, singing their praises to the Gods and praying for the dancers to recover swiftly. Hunkapi – The Making of Relatives
Hunkápi was first used to make peace between the Lakóta and Ree people. Making the Ree relatives ensured peace between the tribes. This relationship mirrored the relationship of the Lakóta people with Wakan Tanka.
The first ceremony with the Ree took place over several days. Near the end came the painting of faces.

The women’s faces were painted red and the men’s were painted red with a blue circle around the face and blue lines on the forehead, cheekbones and chin.
Being painted symbolized change, indicating a person has been reborn and taken on new responsibilities and a new relationship. Past troubles between the new relatives are forgotten.
Today, one can become part of a Tiyóspaye – extended family, by birth, marriage or hunkápi.

This rite was performed at the time when a young girl realized the change taking place in her life was a sacred thing.
The ceremony was held to purify her in preparation for becoming a woman and bearing children. Her family built a tipi and gathered necessary objects for the ritual, which was conducted by a holy man.
On the day of the ceremony, sweetgrass was burned and all the ceremonial objects were purified with the smoke. The Pipe was smoked and prayer was offered up to Wakan Tanka, to the four directions and to the Earth.
In the ceremony, a buffalo skull was a central object. It was colored with the red paint to symbolize the earth. Cherries and water were placed before the skull.

Tobacco was spread in the shape of a cross, and blue paint put on display to symbolize the coming together of earth and sky.
The holy man then gave the girl a piece of buffalo meat, and the water and cherries were passed to members of her family.
A feast was held, and a giveaway took place. The goodness and holiness that came to the young girl also then extended to the whole tribe.

Throwing of the Ball Ritual – Tapa Wanka Yap:
“In Native American philosophy the fundamental interconnectedness an oneness of all beings forms the basis of all other aspects of their understanding of the universe. Therefore, any cause has its effect both on the entity involved, as well as on the whole, and events never stand isolated. Living and acting in harmony with the Great Spirit is the basis of all ethics. It saves one from harming others and oneself, leading ultimately to a return to the Great Spirit, from which we all come, and to wholeness instead of loneliness or separateness.”
Plains Indians teach their children to cease thinking and acting for the sake of one’s own gain, but to think and act for the betterment of their family and tribe. They tell them to “Do right, because it is right, and not to gain for yourself.” When they do the right thing the Great Spirit, Wakan Tanka knows and sees that it has been done correctly.

The Throwing of the Ball Ritual is done only by the traditionalist Native Americans, if its done at all any longer. The ritual is only one of many rituals being lost to posterity and many young people do not even know of it.
The ball represents Wakan Tanka or the universe. The game symbolizes the course of a man’s life, which he should spend in trying to catch the ball even though the odds of catching the ball are against him.
A Lakota man named Moves Walking had the vision describing this rite but did not speak of it until much later when High Hollow Horn had a dream telling him Moves Walking knew of a seventh rite from White Buffalo Cow Woman that should belong to all the people. High Hollow Horn went to Moves Walking and told him of his dream so Moves Walking agreed to share his vision.
A buffalo skin ball filled with buffalo hair that is first painted all red representing the world. Blue paint (representing the heavens) is used for the four dots that are made at the four quarters. Then two blue circles are made around the ball to make two paths joining the four quarters. This painted buffalo ball represents the material and spiritual aspects of the universe.
The following items are used in the ceremony besides the ball; a pipe, kinnikinnik, sweet grass, a spotted eagle feather, knife, hatchet, sage, bag of earth, red and blue paint, a buffalo skull and a food rack painted blue. Each of these items are used in ceremonial prayers before the players begin the game.
The ritual uses four teams and four goals. Each goal was set on one of the four sacred directions; east, south, west and north.
A very young Sioux girl stands in the center representing Wakan Tanka as eternally youthful and pure with no darkness. She also represents the first stage of the four stages of life and Mother Earth and future generations. She throws the ball to each goal and everyone at the goal scrambles to catch the ball. Only one of those trying to catch the ball will end up with it.
The goals represent that Wakan Tanka is everywhere, including all of the four directions. Then the young girl throws the ball straight up into the air and all the teams try to get it. This represents the power from Wakan Tanka that descends on the people. When one person finally has possession of the ball it is given back to the young girl. The ones that catch the ball are given a valuable present such as a horse or a buffalo robe. These five winners represent the few people who reach a special closeness with Wakan Tanka even though many seek that closeness.
To receive a great blessing, each of the people participating must choose to reach for the ball, while acknowledging or understanding that not everyone will be able to catch it. After the five catches of the ball, a prayer of thanks and acknowledgment is made and Wakan Tanka is asked to help the people retain its relationship with him and help them walk the sacred path without ignorance.
Then everyone sits down to a huge feast of traditional Native American food.
Native American wisdom is present in all of the tribes and passed on in many ways. But it is a shame to lose the old, traditional ceremonies and the understanding of why they were done.
According to Black Elk, the Throwing of the Ball is the 7th and last of the 7 Sacred Rituals given to the people by White Buffalo Cow Woman.
