Former Act leader and Labour minister Richard Prebble has resigned from the Waitangi Tribunal.
He was appointed to the role in October 2024 by Māori Development Minister Tama Potaka.
In a NZ Herald column on Wednesday, Prebble said the Waitangi Tribunal has turned the Treaty upside down.
He said he had no interest in participating in the Tribunal while it turned the Treaty into a “socialist manifesto”.
In a statement, Potaka said his focus was now on “moving swiftly to complete the appointment of a new member”.

This is totally incorrect.
I hold The Restoration, sovereignty and liberation documents done in 2013 ratified in 2016 which not only enshrines the treaty of Waitangi but prior treaties of Monanui a kiwa and also the declaration of Independence.
A political football and one of expediency is nothing but the comings and goings of persons while the treaty has remained long and enduring as have others of Moanui a kiwa We are a realm and this is who the British crown did treaty with.
Over my time as Mother of the nations the tribunal ruled that Maori never ceded sovereignty and now due to socialist left ideology its suddenly changing to comply with them is not going to wash.
I understand that the New Zealand Government is in a predicament currently striving for the right to rule which they do not have. That the treaty is misused for their convenience is also not acceptable.
