I have witnessed a woman sat bemoaning the genocide of Maori and while this is not the topic of this writing my response to anyone on this matter is thus, the horror of it is not exclusive to Maori and I would rather see my people stand and heal than sit and stay victims of such foul actions. Not knowing anything about makutu at the time I unknowingly witnessed a short while later this same woman roll a rope of makutu and hand it over with a smile. That it was a death makutu only showing itself over a period of time. Which act of genocide is more horrific? Which more justified?

It stands to reason that this womanโs judgment is highly impaired. And judgement, true judgement, requires all the facts for which she had none. Nor can her deed in any form be justified. She did not know the heart of the woman she victimized nor her thoughts, and beliefs rather she some how justified her intentions. Nothing was going to stop her even though she had received protection earlier from the one she chose to hurt. Then what truth in her words I would rather light a candle than add to your darkness which was a saying she espoused. What she invoked that day would take the life of an innocent and beautiful young woman leaving the one she chose to hurt less a child. That she did not stop there is not part of this writing but it is a good example of what makutu is.

Makutu comes forth from a bent and twisted mind. It is the poison on the tip of the dart thrown and always it is of the darkest place in the persons soul who invokes it. It is the abuse of power and power misused. It is the act of controlling others and it is an act against God. It is an act that must be avoided at all costs.
Spells being cast another example. This is immaturity of spirituality in and of it’s self. One has not reached or attained maturity so casts spells for a false power never attaining the greater path or way through such methods
Thus makutu comes in many levels but all levels come from that dark place within the soul of the one invoking it. Be it a desire to see another hurt or fall from grace. Be it a false judgement against another, be it a thought of ill intent directed towards another or false words spoken about another. It is a destructive force. It is a curse and all of these things are the actions of harm against another.
It can be the act of an individual or a group and can like the spreading of gossip causes damage to a persons life and well being. It is an act of ignorance. It is not exclusive to Maori, a curse is a curse regardless of the label used to describe it.
All of you will have such surrounding stories and examples as it goes on like this all over the world. It is a spiritual immaturity. Examples abound like that of a gay man who was set to marry a woman but had a male partner and this had been the case all the while of their two year engagement. He wanted a family and was prepared to sacrifice the woman’s well being for his selfishness. Or there is the married man who left his wife at her birthing bed to be with a male. She could not comprehend WHY he did this to her. God does not go about creating these circumstances people do. People may curse one through their rituals of such or curse them through their own self interest and dishonesty. One is simply ignoring “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” Self responsibility is a discipline that leads to the way thus until one has achieved such one has not taken the first step on the spiritual journey to God. I would rather light a candle than add to your darkness means doing just that not espousing what one does not practice.
