Heart Totatara
9th October TeManawa is informed she is to receive a Totara tree piece with her symbol the heart in it. The Totara was at Onepoto Park and Nga Puhi cut it down and distributed it to other Iwi for carving. It grew in the shape of the Heart
Totara is a forest giant, with a massive woody trunk that holds aloft thousands of sharp needle-like leaves. It is covered in thick, stringy bark and can live for over 1000 years. It earned the respect of Maori, who referred to it as Rakau Rangatira – chiefly tree – and its timber was prized above all others.
